The scientific name of the Green-and-gold Tanager is Tangara schrankii. This bird belongs to the family Thraupidae.

This bird from South America has two different subspecies, called T.s. venzuelana and T.s. schrankii, respectively. Green-and-gold Tanagers generally travel in small family groups or pairs. They may even travel with flocks consisting of several species.

Species Description:

The average weight and length of this bird is, respectively, 19 gm and 12 cm. This bird is green, with a yellow belly, center of breast, rump, and crown. Younger birds and females have a duller coloration with a spotted black green crown and a slightly yellow rump.

Species Habitat:

This bird can be found throughout the central and western Amazon Basin, in the countries of Ecuador, eastern Venezuela, central Bolivia, Peru, northwestern Brazil, and Columbia. The Green-and-gold Tanager prefers tropical and subtropical swamps and moist lowland forests. Their preferred elevation varies from no more than 900 m in Venezuela to 1650 m in Peru.

Reproduction:

The nest is built by the female and is made of lichens and dried leaves. The average clutch size is two eggs, which may be brown and red in appearance. The eggs usually incubate for 13-14 days, then leave the nest after another 15-16 days. While they are young, the female and male will feed their babies fruit and insects.

Diet:

Diet consists of fruit, seeds, and insects. They forage for food mostly from mid to upper levels of trees, but will occasionally forage lower. They will hunt for insects in dense foliage on branches.
